First Quarter Unit Plans
August 24-26 2017
This week students will be discussing classroom policy, working on participating in class, taking notes,(should have notes in note book). Home work for Friday is to have an outside book to read a folder with first and last name on outside. Students will be interviewing each other to become better acquainted with each other. On Friday we will begin a quick review of grammar, and start our poetry unit.
August 29-September 2 2017
The focus of this week's plans will be on Poetry, and
Figurative language. Types of sentences will be reviewed, STAR (reading test) will be administered and students will have the opportunity to write their own poem. We had a tremendous first week. Students came prepared to class, participated, which resulted in a fun-learning-teaching classroom.

We are off to a great start. Students are amazing. Working extremely well in class so it has not been necessary to assign outside work. This week we will be focusing on sentence structure, research, writing summary, and learning the plt diagram. Students should be reading every day at home and during SRB. STAR Reading assessment. This week we are working on our rough draft for the first and second paragraph of the Narrative Essay. Students should have completed the Introduction . Please note the rough draft must be turned in typed.Paragraph one will be due September 28th. Students will be taking a test on subject compliments and reviewing punctuation. Transitions between paragraphs will be stressed. All rough drafts must be typed. I am looking forward to assisting the students with writing improvement.

We have a great week coming up. On Oct 6th I will have the opportunity to meet you at parent -teacher conferences. In the classroom, the students will be doing research on the historical significance of the book Between the Shades of Grey. Students will be completing the rough draft of the Narrative essay, and writing the conclusion. Comma rules, and punctuation applications as well as writing and documenting from a prompt will be reviewed. I honestly have to say I am very impressed with this group of 7th graders, their work ethic is great, attitude excellent, manners superb. Have a super week.
October 10-14 2016
This week we will finish our book talks, , complete revisions on our corrected rough draft of our Narrative essay. Students will hand in their final draft of their essay on October12th. Reading at home during the week and weekends is extremely important; please encourage your child to read. The class will be reviewing punctuation. We will write from a prompt and begin the process of citing evidence to support our point of view. Complete a theme poster. Thank you for taking the time to come to student conferences. I appreciate how valuable time is and always welcome the opportunity to form a partnership with you to enhance the learning environment.
October 17-21
On Tuesday of this week October 18th the Final Draft of the Narrative essay is due. This week we will be reviewing punctuation,concentrating on writing an introduction from a prompt, using parenthetical citations, and incorporating sentence variety within our essays. We are continuing to read Shade of Gray, Students will be introduced to literary terminology including Plot, Climate. etc.Rising action, Falling Action, etc. Discussion Technique using Socratic Seminars will be introduced. Busy week, always lots to do. 7th graders continue to progress.

November 1-4 2016
Students are beginning their research for their 2nd required essay. (Common Core Standards) This essay will be informative and requires research and the use of parenthetical documentation as well as a Works Cited. Students will be choosing their topic and working on an their outline. This week we have a great educational experience for the students. We are having our Geese Gig. Scott Schutz, President, of Ducks Unlimited is heading up a demo of waterfowl education. Scott and his crew will be bringing a boat, duck blind, dogs, and calls Cabelas, wild life photographer will be doing a demo and bring his photography equipment. The students will rotate through educational stations Hopefully this will be an impetus to continue research for the informative essay. Mrs, Muller, science, will be including her students who will be researching species etc. I am looking forward to an outstanding week of inspiration, and a great start on the informative essay.

Just compeleted an awesome week with our field experience.
This week we will be going to the library to have instruction on using data bases for research, Topics will be chosen, an outline format completed.
Students will continue researching information for their Informative Essay. Should complete Main Points I,II,II by the end of the week. On Thursday the 10th the outline of the three main points is due. Students have a rubric to follow. There will be some homework this week. Although the majority of research and writing will be done in class, students need to complete unfinished class work and read every evening in their outside reading book.
Please remind your students I am always here to help. Usually arrive at school by 7:15 am and often stay until 4:00 pm. Have a great week. Thank you for encouraging your 7th grader to complete assigned work on time.
November 14 - 17th 2016
Another short week with lots to do. Students will be writing their 1st ,2nd, and 3rd paragraph of their informative essay as well as peer editing their introduction and making necessary corrections. We will be attending the musical at Sr. High on .Thursday. Reminder to read over the weekend. I will be having a substitute on Thursday. Please remind your child to read over the weekend. I really appreciate your interest in your child's educational progress.
November 24-26
A short week, Happy Thanksgiving!! Informative essay, final draft due Wednesday November 25th. Students have done very well with their writing; struggled with parenthetical citations, and some students did not get their essay turned in by the deadline. Please remind your child to tun their work in on time. We will be writing a letter to our families about how thankful we are and what we can do as individuals to contribute to family happiness. I think you will enjoy reading the letters, please ask your child to share. Enjoy the long weekend.

We are now entering the busy holiday season. Classes are finishing the book Between Shades of Gray. The book
was very enjoyable and received high marks from the
students. A final open book test will be given on
Thursday. We are going to begin reading The Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. The story really
has almost nothing to do with Christmas but rather makes the reader consider the proposition that money is not the most important thing in the world. Almost all informative essays are completed and have been turned in. We will be reviewing what we have learned, (parenthetical citations, organization of the essay and writing from another prompt about the Perils of Indifference.

lit book and catch up on the reading as well as complete
notes and work sheets. Students will be allowed to use
their notes on the play for quizzes but not on vocabulary . Students are

December 12-22 2016
Busy week for everyone. Students are ready for Christmas and enjoying the excitement of the season. We will finish reading the play this week, and students will be doing a scene of their choice on the classroom stage. Students will also be taking a final test on vocab and A Christmas Carol by completing their packet on Act II. Part of the assessment will include writing from a promt and using textual evidence with citations. We have had such great classes this semester, a super learning atmosphere. I am looking forward to the new semester and welcoming my 7th graders back to challenges, sharing, and hopefully instilling a love of learning. I am so blessed to be teaching at the Middle School. Enjoy the holidays, Merry Christmas.
2nd Semester Unit Plans 2017
January 3-6 2017
Welcome back! Hope you all had a terrific break. We have an exciting semester planned for our 7th grade Language Art students. Our largest project will be writing an argumentative essay, complete with documentation,and extensive research. Although, this is a difficult assignment we will be doing the paragraphs in increments. If your child is absent please be sure that they catch up with their writing assignments. I am asking my students to give me 73 minutes of absolute effort and I will guarantee them a progressive learning environment with a strong foundation in Language Arts for next year. Fun projects will include literature circles, application of strong evidence support in a short debate, and Poetry Fridays. This week we will begin by reestablishing a learning environment, a quick review of what we have learned, and taking the STAR Screening, ( a state requirement) . Learning vocab for an argumentative essay, and parenthetical citations will be introduced and reviewed. Have a great week, I am so glad to be back. January 9--13 2017 Students will continue to work on vocabulary for argumentative essay, as well as reviewing how to write an introductory paragraph for a prompt in which they are defending a claim. The use of note cards as well as source cards will be explained. Works cited will be explained with hands-on applications. We will also be discussing the rubric for the research paper, and beginning research. Students have been very receptive to learning arduous concepts. Because we are doing a research paper and students cannot afford to fall behind, if their homework is not completed the student is required to come in after school so I can assist them in completing their work. Your child will call you if this is necessary. Please check that you child is completing their homework, when it is assigned. Thank you for your support.
January 17-20 2017This week begins with an in-service on Monday for teachers. The agenda will assist me in learning and applying teaching techniques in my classroom. (I love practical inservice sessions!) Students will be completing a fluid outline for their argumentative essay. (this outline may change as they get farther into their research) Writing an introduction with a thesis statement is due on Friday Jan. 22. On Thursday, January 21students will be taking a terminology test over argumentative vocabulary. Lots to do, lots to learn; I am requesting 73 minutes of absolute effort to accomplish State Learning Objectives- as well as preparing students for the 8th grade. Students are tackling some tough concepts, and doing very well. I am so pleased with their progress. If your child misses school please remind them to come in so I can assist their learning. February 6-10 2017 Classes are finishing rough draft of argumentative essay which is due February 10. We are beginning a new unit in poetry out
loud,we are completing our group work and now writing individual poetry using a character analysis format. working on presentation techniques ie posture,attitude, gestures, eye contact. Students will be applying these techniques by giving a presentation with their group on the 10th. A busy but fun week. Are the up and down cold/heat waves ever going to end?
February 13-16 2017 Classes are starting a new unit of analyzing propganda..Will be learning new terminology and apply their knowledge by designing an original ad on a conttroversial topic...giving their book talks this week, and correcting their rough draft of their argumentative essay. The final draft is due February 18th. We have now completed the required common core essay standards. The students will be reviewing the elements of an informative essay and writing sample paragraphs. Hopefully this week the students will increase their expertise in writing conclusions. Where is that early Spring? Is the groundhog incorrect?
February 29-March 2 2017 Students working on writing better conclusions, Begin our Lit Circles Discussion. It should be a fun week and a real change of pace for the students. Only 21 more days until the first day of Spring. Have a great weekend ; good luck to the basketball players at the big four. Drive carefully.

This week we will be writing our final Student Learning Objective (SLO) on the Perils of indifference. Lit Circle discussionsbegin. Students working on writing a thesis statement. writing a conclusion is still weak so we will continue to practice. Congratulations to the 7th grade boy's basketball team on winning the big four. This week we will be reading the short story Rikki,Tikki, Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling. Students will be preparing an I movie or a keynote on their research of India. Speech skills as well as working and writing cooperatively will be stressed. Should be a fun week. Students need to be reminded to not only do quality work but also to complete their assignments on time. Sometimes it is difficult in the Spring for students to concentrate. Any encouragement from home is welcome. Have a super Spring break
March 20-24 2017 Narrative essay review packet. Writing a short narrative using Dialogue, Chronological order, and Descriptive Language.
March 27-31 2017 Students will be reviewing the three outlines--Informative, Narrative, and Persuasive. We will be completing The Giver and completing the worksheet and vocabulary for chapters 16-19. much. I think Spring Fever is early this year.
April 3-April 7 2017 A busy week, reviewing verb tense, punctuation, in grammar. Taking the practice performance test for Smarter Balance. It is imperative that students have their I Pad fully charged when they come to school and that they have some type of ear buds, head phones, that can be used on their I-Pad. If students forget their supplies they will receive an infraction. Please remind your 7th grader. Thank you for your help.
April 10-13 2017 Only a 4 day week, It is Good Friday and Easter. Students will be correcting and assessing their writing skills from the Smarter Balance Practice Test. Quiz on Thursday over tenses, thesis statement;, writing a claim, and citing evidence.

A fun week for the students. We are studying Greek Mythology and how it relates to present day. Students enjoy the videos and stories. Grateful for the rain but could use some sunshine. Mid-term grades are next week, as well as testing for the Smarter Balance. Pleas be sure your student gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast. If your student is absent remind them to come in and get their worksheet completed. Have a great week.

May 1- 5 2017 We will be continuing with Greek mythology and doing some fun projects as a group.

The students will be reviewing the elements of an informative essay and writing sample paragraphs. Hopefully this week the students will increase their expertise in writing conclusions. Where is that early Spring? Is the groundhog incorrect?
February 29-March 2 2017 Students working on writing better conclusions, Begin our Lit Circles Discussion. It should be a fun week and a real change of pace for the students. This week we will be writing our final Student Learning Objective (SLO) on the Perils of indifference. Lit Circle discussionsbegin. Students working on writing a thesis statement. writing a conclusion is still weak so we will continue to practice. Congratulations to the 7th grade boy's basketball team on winning the big four. March 13-14 2017 (March Madness/ Go Kernels
This week we will be reading the short story Rikki,Tikki, Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling. Students will be preparing an I movie or a keynote on their research of India. Speech skills as well as working and writing cooperatively will be stressed. Should be a fun week. Students need to be reminded to not only do quality work but also to complete their assignments on time. Sometimes it is difficult in the Spring for students to concentrate. March 20-24 2017 Narrative essay review packet. Writing a short narrative using Dialogue, Chronological order, and Descriptive Language.
March 27-31 2017 Students will be reviewing the three outlines--Informative, Narrative, and Persuasive. We will be completing The Giver and completing the worksheet and vocabulary for chapters 16-19. much. I think Spring Fever is early this year.
April 3-April 7 2017 A busy week, reviewing verb tense, punctuation, in grammar. Taking the practice performance test for Smarter Balance. It is imperative that students have their I Pad fully charged when they come to school and that they have some type of ear buds, head phones, that can be used on their I-Pad. If students forget their supplies they will receive an infraction. Please remind your 7th grader. Thank you for your help.
April 10-13 2017 Only a 4 day week, It is Good Friday and Easter. Students will be correcting and assessing their writing skills from the Smarter Balance Practice Test. Quiz on Thursday over tenses, thesis statement;, writing a claim, and citing evidence.

A fun week for the students. We are studying Greek Mythology and how it relates to present day. Students enjoy the videos and stories. Grateful for the rain but could use some sunshine. Mid-term grades are next week, as well as testing for the Smarter Balance. Pleas be sure your student gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast. If your student is absent remind them to come in and get their worksheet completed. Have a great week.

May 1- 5 2017 We will be continuing with Greek mythology and doing some fun projects as a group.
May 8-12 2017 . We will be completing a packet on Hercules in Greek Mythology which will be their final in Greek Mythology. Please remind your 7th grader to complete work on time so their grade does not drop during these last few weeks of school. Have a great weekend.
